Why are you shifting career focus after more than 20 years?
I should first note that I’ve always been interested in marketing, strategic communication, and training evident in my undergraduate coursework, internships, and the service opportunities I’ve pursued as a professor. This is not a complete shift, then, but rather a different application of my training and skills.
I’m making this change now due to numerous personal and cultural factors. I’d be happy to discuss the personal factors in a conversation. Culturally, the rise of generative AI has been demoralizing as a professor. The past few years have involved a sharp increase in students using generative AI as a shortcut (even on small assignments that are reflective in nature), which suggests their interest in getting through courses to earn the degree rather than getting an education. I am ready to pursue other career options that will allow me to apply my skills in a different manner and flex some different muscles.
How do you approach strategic thinking in your work?
As a researcher, I am trained to ask questions. This is the foundation to my strategic thinking. In the context of communication strategy, the questions I ask relate to the psychology of persuasion, consumer decision-making processes, understanding market trends, and opportunities to leverage strengths. I have experience with marketing research and assessment tools that use concrete data to guide strategy. These analytical skills help me develop actionable insights but I also believe in the power of collaboration – the ability for multiple minds to brainstorm and generate better and more diverse ideas than a single mind alone – for impactful strategies that resonate with target audiences.

Absolutely! My creative work page showcases various projects I’ve worked on, including marketing campaigns and public advocacy. These examples provide insight into my my capabilities and my approach to campaign strategy. In July 2025, I completed a Google certificate in Digital Marketing and E-commerce that included background knowledge of and hands on activities with social media and e-mail marketing, social media and search engine advertising, SEO, and SEM.
